YOGA is a collection of spiritual, physical and mental practices. In Hindu
mythology, it has always designated as the cure for various diseases. YOGA has
earned special recognition from the United Nations and declared 21 st June as the
INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY.
YOGA:
The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit root, means ‘to join’, or ‘to unite’,
symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. According to Yogic
scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness
with universal consciousness.
It is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India.
The aim of Yoga practice (sadhana) is to overcome all kinds of sufferings that
lead to a sense of freedom in every walk of life with holistic health,
happiness and harmony.
It plays an important role in the psycho-social care and in the present
resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic which added stress and anxiety among
the people, yoga practice is actively sought to achieve reduced anxiety and
stress so that improved sleep may positively impact immunity.
Today, it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow
in popularity.
IDY LOGO:
In the logo, folding of both hands symbolize yoga, the union, which reflects
the union of individual consciousness with that of universal consciousness, a
perfect harmony between mind and body, man and nature.

Brightness signifies the Fire element

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY:
On Sept. 27, 2014, while addressing the 69 th session of United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA). THE Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi urged the world
community to adopt an International Yoga.
The PM spoke about the invaluable gift of yoga that ancient Indian tradition
has given to the world.
In a very impactful and convincing speech, the PM laid emphasis on the fact
that Yoga would help in bringing harmony between man and nature. It is not
about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world
and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us
to deal with climate change.
The initiative was appreciated and approved by 193 members of UN General
Assembly on 11 Dec., 2014. The Yoga Day proposal was supported by 177
countries and designate 21 st June as INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY.
The UNGA recognized that Yoga brings harmony in all walks of life and thus, is
known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many
lifestyle- related disorders
.
The first Yoga Day celebration in 2015 at Rajpath in New Delhi created two
Guinness World Records.
OBJECTIVES OF INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY:
This Day aims in developing spiritual awareness among the people.
To help people get over or fight various medical issues by practicing regular
Yoga.
To help people, making aware about the benefits of yoga and connect them
with nature.
To maintain and strengthen a global- connect with people from different parts
of the world.
Develop a meditation habit for peace of mind and teach self-awareness, which
is essential to survive in the world without stress.
It helps in spreading the message of love, peace and oneness amongst the
people of the world.
SIGNIFICANCE:
21ST June, the date holds special significance as it is the longest day in the
Northern Hemisphere. This is the time of the year when the Sun moves from the
north to south. It is also one of special two days when the rays of the Sun directly
hit one of the two tropical latitude lines. It is believed that this change brings a
significant impact on the lives of the inhabitants of this planet especially for the
people residing within eighteen degrees to forty-eight degrees north latitude.
The practice of Yoga can be traced back to the time of Lord Shiva, who is also
known as Adi Guru. It is believed that it was on the day of the summer solstice
that Lord Shiva began imparting the knowledge of yoga to the world.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA 2022 THEME:
The theme of this year of International Day of Yoga will be ‘YOGA FOR
HUMANITY’. The 8 th edition of IDY is all set to be held on 21 st June worldwide. The
PM Modi announced it in his monthly MANN KI BAAT program. The main event of
the IDY-2022 demonstration will be held in MYSURU, KARNATAKA. PM also urged
people to take part in the celebrations with enthusiasm. The Ministry of AYUSH
celebrates yoga day on a large scale, people are invited to join the event. To
spread awareness about yoga T-SHIRTS, YOGA MATS, YOGA BOOKLETS are also
distributed to the organization/people.

research in recent years has uncovered many physical and mental benefits that
